The validity of spatial data-based EIA screening decisions

Screening is an important step in the EIA process as it here where significance of possible impacts associated with a proposed development first considered and need for assessment determined. There no one-size-fits-all approach to screening, but approaches can broadly be categorised into discretionary prescriptive approaches. In both types spatial information used inform screening decisions and, some cases, determine outcome altogether. A sample ten South African case studies are reviewed analysed illustrate effects scale decision making.
